The witch

Lorcan was exhausted, the halfling had been keeping the house going for weeks now and while he didn’t mind and saw it as his purpose even, he had to admit that he was running out of energy.

“We have to do something; he can’t keep this up” Nereida whispered across the table.

“what can we do? It is not safe to be in the open with so many wounded” replied the half orc

“I can hear you, and I am fine.” Lorcan sleepily replied.

“Fine? Have you looked at yourself recently Lorcan?”

“Its what is on the inside that matters, and I am fine”

“One full day, between us we can keep each other safe surely” Nereida was almost pleading now.

“I told you….”

“We can indeed Nereida” Targa cut in.

“when… how?” stammered the halfling

“all in good time, now drop the house and get some well-earned rest, we can take it from here.”

Hours later the cave was filled with the echoing sound of Lorcan’s snoring, the group sat in a huddle whispering to each other while sparing worrying glances towards the dragonborn now sat crossed legged at the cave opening, blocking some of the storm from view.

Targa was still, breathing in deeply he closed his eyes releasing his grip on the sword which lay in front of him. Thoughts of his mother and father slowly seeped into his mind, until grief was about to take hold, he breathed deeper allowing the thoughts to pass. The dragonborn flexed his toes feeling the cool earth move beneath them, he moved his focus and then he felt it another energy moving through the earth.

“I know you are there…. Witch” the words were in his mind, a smirk crossing his face.

“My name is Aurora, Targa and you should use it”

“Aurora, like the sunrise”

“ironic really since I bring nothing but darkness, I really should thank you for freeing me”

“In doing that I have unleashed this terrible storm upon us”

“You… you think I did this?”

“who else would?”

“I think you are overlooking your own powers, come to me and I will show you”

The dragonborn opened his eyes, heart full of longing and an urge to go into the storm consumed him. He stood slowly placing the sword on his back and turned to his friends.

“We can’t sit here idle, I am going out there”

“Are you mad?”

“I will be alright, I’ve hunted in worse conditions than this just…. Just keep the fire burning high and I will be back soon”

They watched his great mass plough through the snow with ease, he approached the thick storm cloud. Targa paused reaching out his hand as it shifted creating a doorway.

He was filled with excitement, a longing pulling him forward and he was gone.

In the centre of the swirling storm was a figure, a skirt of chain mail complamenting the golden breastplate. The women had long claw like fingers, her face was beautiful despite the wide black pools she had for eyes and the long elven ears. Yet Targa looked at her in awe.

“Targa, finally we can speak face to face… please come and site.” with a wave of her hand she created two chairs from the earth.

The whisper

“oh Targa, I tried to tell you, this world…. it is so flawed and at
times unforgiving”

“what?” a look of confusion came over his face. “you died
many years ago”

“where do you come up with these ideas boy, I am here aren’t I?”

“yes father” The dragonbourne’s head grew fuzzy with the world
becoming dull.

“Targa” he looked up as a dark shadow sprung behind his father but
he was gone, in his place now stood a figure clocked in black a long spear in
it’s hand.

“who are you, what did you do to my father?”

“Targa” voices in the distance distracted him for just a second,
but long enough for the figure to come next to him and take hold of his arm, he
gasped as it whispered.

“soon”

Lorcan was frantically shaking the dragonbourne, tears streaking down his
face as he called out to his friend.

“come on lad, wake up”

Targa woke grabbing the hafling by the throat in fear, his eye wide as he
struggled to focus against the light. He searched for the shadow only releasing
his grip when the hafling punched him with what strength he could muster.

“Lorcan, I am sorry… I “

“ahh don’t worry about it” he gasped “bad dreams will do that
to ya”

“dreams… yeah” the dragonbourne rubbed his arm wincing when connecting with
where the figure had touched him.

“right laddie, we need to get you back to the house and get some rest, now
can you walk?”

“I… I think so”

“great now you can carry me” the two friends laughed, the wind blew cold and
the halfling shivered.

“bbrrr, let’s go quick eh, there is a storm brewing by the feels of it”

Slowly they walked back to the house, Targa raised his hand in greeting to
the others all of whom where now dancing around the hallway as he headed inside.
Ravana leaned against the wall, a smirk on her face, Targa glanced around the
room.

“Aidene?” he asked

“uh no way Mr, you need to rest” she said

“but I need to see her, is she ok? What happened?” he was speaking so fast
it almost sounded like a ramble.

She placed the back of her hand on his forehead her eyes narrowed.

“you are burning up, you need to rest…. No Targa not another word, there
will be plenty of time for stories. For now go to bed and rest.

The halfling placed his arm around the dragonbourne pulling him towards his room,

“women eh lad, save their lives or take revenge on someone for thum and look
what thanks you get. There is no arguing with them really, think they know
everything they do…..”

“I heard that Lorcan”

“ye were meant to dear….”

“Lorcan, please tell me you are not upsetting Ravana” Nereida was looking
over the halflings shoulder at the dwarf, who was tapping her foot a defiant hand
on her hip.

“well… you see…. She… aw hell Sorry Ravana”

The halfling shrugged at dragonbourne who holding back a laugh.

“it’s not funny ye know…. Ouch move it ya big lout you heard the lady to bed
with you.”
